Bug Out Large Tote Bag

Bert Ernie doesn’t usually draw things. Then he drew this and something looked back.

Bug Out started as pure abstraction — shapes pushed around in Illustrator with no plan and no subject. Somewhere in the middle of it, two enormous compound eyes surfaced out of the noise, and once you’ve seen them you cannot unsee them. He didn’t put them there. He just found them, same as you’re about to.

And it’s pink. Gloriously, unrepentantly, hot magenta pink, which is the loudest color there is and the one everybody’s been told not to take seriously.

16×20″. Holds 17.8 litres. Watching you.

Description

Here’s the thing about Bert Ernie: he never draws anything.

That’s not a criticism, it’s the method. He opens Illustrator, starts pushing shapes, layering, mirroring, and lets the thing become whatever it becomes. No subject. No sketch. No plan. Ask him what one of his designs is of and he’ll look at you like you’ve asked what a colour tastes like.

Which is what makes this one funny. Years ago he built this — a dense pink field, thousands of little tiles marching in rows, curves swimming underneath — and then sat back to look at it, and two enormous compound eyes looked back. Bug eyes. Right there in the middle, staring straight out of his own screen. He hadn’t drawn them. Nobody drew them. His brain assembled them out of pure noise, the same way yours is doing right now, and then he named the thing after them and the name stuck. The man is not immune to his own work.

Now the pink. This is the loudest color in the spectrum and somewhere along the line it got sorted into a box marked not serious, and an awful lot of people have quietly agreed to leave it there. wild peach does not agree. Pink at this volume isn’t cute and it isn’t sweet — it’s a colour that arrives in a room three seconds before you do. Expect to see a lot more of it around here. This is where it starts.

Bug Out print file — the full wraparound design for the large tote bag, showing the mirrored pink field and the compound eyes
The print file, front to back in one piece, mirrored top to bottom. The eyes are on the front. The logo sits upside down at the bottom because that end folds over to become the back — so whatever’s watching you is only watching from one side. Small mercy.

Printed to order by Printful, ethically, the moment you buy it. Nothing sits in a warehouse. Nothing gets made until somebody wants it.

One last thing. A bug-out bag is the one you grab on the way out the door when things go wrong — the emergency bag, the one you disappear with. This is a bag called Bug Out in hot pink with a metre of insect eyes on the side of it, and you will not be disappearing anywhere. Everyone within three hundred metres will know precisely where you are and roughly how you’re feeling about it. Twenty-two pounds of capacity. Zero stealth. We think that’s the right trade.

Too loud to ignore.
