Squares Of Madness Large Tote Bag

Two designs. One bag. Neither of them will back down.

Squares of Madness is exactly what it says. Bert Ernie took two of his graphic designs, laid one over the other, and then — instead of choosing — cut them into a checkerboard and let both through. Square on, square off. Design A, design B, ten thousand times over, all the way to the edge.

Stand back and it’s a shimmering weave. Lean in and it falls apart into squares. Both are true.

16×20″. Holds 17.8 litres. Front and back are mirror images that don’t quite agree.

Description

Most artists, faced with two designs, pick one. Bert Ernie is not most artists.

Somewhere in the archive there are two graphic designs, made years apart, that were never meant to meet. Bert put them in the same room. Then — and this is the part where colleagues start backing towards the door — he cut a checkerboard through both and turned it on. Square on: the first design. Square off: the second. Alternating, relentlessly, across the entire bag. Neither one wins. Neither one loses. They just occupy the same space forever, like flatmates who stopped speaking in 2019.

The result does something genuinely strange to your eyes. From across a room it reads as a single shimmering textile — a weave, a knit, something loomed. Get within arm’s length and it detaches into thousands of individual squares and you can see both designs at once, arguing. Bert layered bump and shadow effects over the whole thing to sell the illusion, which produces the best joke in the wild peach catalogue: this is a print of a woven fabric, printed onto an actual woven fabric. Fake weave on real weave. He thinks this is very funny. He is, annoyingly, right.

Squares of Madness print file — the full wraparound design for the large tote bag, showing the top-to-bottom mirror
The print file, front to back in one piece. Mirrored top to bottom — but layer effects mean the two halves were never identical, so the front and back of your bag are near-twins that don’t quite match. The logo sits upside down at the bottom because that’s the end that folds over to become the back. Symmetry, built and then quietly sabotaged.

Made properly, too — Printful’s ethical print-on-demand, printed to order. No warehouse, no mass production, no bag sitting in a box for two years waiting for someone to want it. Yours gets made because you asked.
