It’s true, by the way. So is nearly everyone.

I Am On Drugs is Bert Ernie’s most misread design, and it’s misread on purpose. Take this bag shopping and watch faces do the arithmetic. Whatever they land on, they’ve told you more about themselves than about you.

The art is late-sixties in its bones — pure translucent color, layer over layer over layer, nothing solid, everything showing through everything else. It’s the softest thing in the shop and the loudest sentence.

16×20″. Holds 17.8 litres. Statins, mostly.

Description

Let’s deal with the elephant. Yes, it says that. On purpose.

Here’s the thing about I Am On Drugs: it’s true. It’s true of Bert Ernie, who rattles gently when he walks. It’s true of the person reading this, statistically speaking — blood pressure, thyroid, antihistamines, something for the reflux, two coffees before nine. It’s true of the man frowning at your bag on the tram, who takes four things a day and has never once thought of that as being on drugs. The sentence is the least controversial claim in the entire shop. It just doesn’t sound like it.

That’s the whole design. Carry this and you’ll watch people’s faces do a small calculation, and whatever they land on, they’ve told you something about themselves and nothing about you. Anyone who gives you grief gets the truth, delivered flat: yes — thyroid medication, twice daily, thanks for asking. Nobody has a follow-up to that. It’s a bag that comes with its own exit.

And the art earns the title without needing the joke. This one’s lineage runs straight back to the late sixties — not a copy of anything, but built on what that work understood: that colour alone can carry a picture, and that things get interesting when you stop making them solid. Everything here is transparent. Layer over layer over layer, verticals drifting through horizontals, a yellow bloom coming up through six other colours like a light behind a curtain. Nothing is opaque. Nothing has a hard edge. In a catalogue of designs that hit you like a brick, this one is the one you fall into.

I Am On Drugs print file — the full wraparound design for the large tote bag, showing the translucent layered color field
The print file, front to back in one piece. The logo sits upside down at the bottom because that end folds over to become the back — so the back stays quiet. Only one side of you is making the announcement.

Printed to order by Printful, ethically, the moment you buy it. Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for someone brave enough.
